Cavaliers return to the diamond

The Virginia baseball team will host the Ontario Blue Jays at Davenport Field next Friday in its first exhibition game of the year, Sept. 21 at 5 p.m. Admission is free and open to all. The Blue Jays are a traveling team consisting of players from ages 16 to 18 that regularly face off against top collegiate competition. This contest will present Virginia's heralded, 16-player recruiting class with its first chance to take the field against a true opponent.

The newcomers will supplement 19 returning players from last year's club, including All-American junior Jacob Thompson and All-ACC player junior David Adams.

The Cavaliers are coming off of a productive season that saw them reach the championship game of the NCAA Regional and finish the season ranked in the top 20 in all the national polls.

Last year's squad lost a school-record six players to the 2007 Major League Baseball Draft, including dual threat Sean Doolittle, who bypassed his final year of eligibility and still left as the school's winningest pitcher and career leader in RBIs.

Virginia will conclude its fall practice schedule with the Orange and Blue World Series, an intrasqaud contest, in mid-October.
