The University of Richmond named Virginia Defensive Coordinator Mike London its head football coach Saturday. London will take the place of Dave Clawson, who accepted the position of offensive coordinator at the University of Tennessee after guiding Richmond to the FCS semifinals this year.
For the past two seasons, London served as Virginia's offensive coordinator. In 2007, the Virginia defense ranked No. 23 in the nation in total defense, after finishing No. 17 in 2003.
London also served on Virginia coach Al Groh's staff from 2001-2004 before spending one year in the NFL with the Houston Texans.
London, 47, now returns to his alma mater, where he graduated in 1983 and began his coaching career in 1988.
Known for his excitement on the field and his recruiting abilities, London leaves Virginia looking for its third defensive coordinator in four seasons.
