Leah Wigger, a former member of the Virginia women's golf team, won her first professional tournament this past weekend in the Sunshine State.
Wigger, a 2007 College graduate, shot a 4-under 212 to win the inaugural American Systems Invitational on the Duramed Futures Tour, held in Daytona Beach, Fla. The victory garnered Wigger $14,000 in prize money.
Wigger has non-exempt rookie status this year on the Ladies Professional Golf Association Tour, meaning she is not given an automatic berth in tournaments and must qualify for those in which she wants to play. Wigger is expected to not play in any more events on the Futures Tour until mid-June because she will be focusing her efforts on qualifying events.
This was Wigger's second event on the Futures Tour this year. Three weeks ago, she finished 16th in the Bright House Networks Open, held in Lakeland, Fla.
Wigger, who was a four-time Academic All-American during her career at Virginia, was the runner-up in both the 2005 NCAA East Regional Championship and the 2005 NCAA Women's Golf Championship. In 2006 she became the Virginia women's golf program's first All-American while earning a runner-up finish at the ACC Championship and winning the Women's Eastern Amateur Championship. Wigger also competed in the 2007 U.S. Women's Open Championship.
