Following the Wednesday afternoon shooting at the off-Grounds University Heights apartment community during which three people were wounded and one was killed, Albemarle County Police have made several arrests and University Heights officials are now making efforts to address the situation, Albemarle County Police Lieut. Todd Hoppwood said.
The incident, Hoppwood said, began as an attempted robbery that eventually resulted in an exchange of gunfire.
Among those arrested are Stacy Lamont Berry, a 20-year old Albemarle County resident charged with murder, and Maricus Antwan Rawlings, another 20-year old Albemarle County resident charged with robbery. An Enterprise School student, who suffered gunshot wounds during the incident, was arrested for robbery, Hoppwood said. Police did not make his name available because he is a minor.
“Additional charges may be forthcoming pending further investigation,” an Albemarle County Police department press release stated.
The victim who suffered fatal injuries Wednesday has been identified as Travis Scott, a 23-year old Albemarle County resident, Hoppwood said. Meanwhile, the victim who arrived at the University Hospital in a private vehicle is now listed as in stable condition. His name, however, will not be released because of police protocol, Hoppwood added.
Because of the shootings, University Heights manager Connie Dunn said she and her staff are making efforts to address safety concerns that have arisen since the incident.
“We are addressing it from every angle,” Dunn said, adding that her community will continue working with the Albemarle County Police department throughout the investigation. Dunn also noted that University Heights is looking into forming a neighborhood watch group as well as other options, such as the possibility of access systems for the two corridors that lead to the property.
According to Dunn, 85 percent of University Heights residents are undergraduate or graduate University students or somehow affiliated with the University.
No further case information will be released as of this time, Hoppwood said.
