Eight new members elected to IFC Governing Board

Dean Michael Citro, new Inter-Fraternity Council president express excitement about new fraternity leaders, look forward to connecting with greater University community

The Inter-Fraternity Council held its second and last round of elections last night, bringing in eight more members to the organization’s 2009-10 Governing Board.

Second-year College student Penn Daniel was elected chairman for membership education, while second-year College student Kayu Muigai will soon begin his term as chairman for community service. The position of chairman for inter-Greek relations will be filled by second-year College student Whitney Johnson, and second-year College student Kyle Menges was elected public relations spokesman.

Also among the eight elected last night are second-year College student Jackson Hill — elected chairman for faculty relations and scholarship — and third-year Commerce student Miguel Alvarez, who will serve as chairman for diversity outreach. Third-year College student Graham Owens will take on the position of chairman for alumni relations, and third-year Engineering student Greg Lamp was elected chairman for publications.

Every Governing Board seat this year was highly contested, with four to 10 candidates running for each of the eight spots. While the competition made for a longer election night than is typical, Michael Citro, assistant dean of fraternity and sorority life, said that such competition bodes well for the Greek community.

“The strong interest among the candidates reflects the commitment of the fraternity system to continue to progress and build upon its previous successes,” he said.

Newly elected IFC President Charles Gamper, a third-year College student, also commended the new board’s enthusiasm for the Greek system.

“I think one of the things that came through in the speeches was the passion not only for their specific positions on the IFC but for the Greek system in general,” he said. “A lot of them found ways to get involved before now.” In this regard, Gamper cited new members’ involvement in Junior IFC, and the Inter-Fraternity Council Judiciary Committee’s Mid-Autumn’s Carnival earlier this academic year.

“Before even joining the IFC these guys have demonstrated a desire to improve Greek life as well as the interaction of Greeks with members of the University community,” Gamper said.
