The Inter-Fraternity Council held its first round of elections last night and named new members to the organization’s next executive committee and governing board. The IFC’s second round of elections for its remaining six committee chair positions will be held Thursday.
Third-year College student Charles Gamper was elected president yesterday, replacing fourth-year College student, Taylor Richardson. Gamper said he decided to run in part because of Richardson’s performance as IFC president.
“He was a calm and effective leader,” Gamper said. “He’s leaving this new governing board with projects that’ll be easily accomplished and a sense of vision for what the IFC can be.”
Gamper was elected on a platform of promoting student safety, responding to chapter needs and improving communication among fraternities — including those in the National Pan-Hellenic Council and Multicultural Greek Council — and the greater University community.
The IFC is made up of an executive board, which is comprised of the president and vice presidents, a governing board with 11 committee members, a member-at-large and individual fraternity presidents.
Fourth-year College student Adam Parsell was elected vice president for judiciary, second-year College student Bill Igou was elected vice president for party control, third-year College student Andy Snyder was elected as vice president for membership, third-year Commerce student David Truetzel was elected vice president for administration and third-year College student Tom Plofchan was elected member-at-large.
The IFC’s large membership allows for effective delegation and room for creativity, Gamper said, noting that he sees the next IFC governing board as a well-formed and competent one.
“Everybody has a strong hold on what they need to do, but it gives them an opportunity to expand on their roles,” he said. “Each person defines it.”
Prospective committee members and executive board members echoed Gamper’s message of self governance, transparency and community outreach in their speeches, as well as plans to continue projects started during the current board’s term.
Richardson said while he enjoyed his term as president, he looks forward to seeing how the new executive committee and governing board will perform.
“A lot of the guys who were elected tonight have a lot of experience,” Richardson said. “I’m just excited to see what they come up with.”
