American authors pushed aside for Euro-centric novels

The 2009 Nobel Prize for Literature quietly slipped past the limelight in the wake of President Barack Obama's surprising win. Last year's announcement came amid a cloud of controversy because prior Secretary of the Swedish Academy had said that "Europe still is the center of the literary world" and dismissed American writing as insular. The new permanent secretary, Peter Englund, attempted to mollify reactions when he explained, "If you are European [it is] easier to relate to European literature. It's the result of psychological bias that we really try to be aware of."

Despite Englund's placating words, the Swedish Academy once again perpetuated its Eurocentric trend. This year's winner, Herta M
