University offers free HIV testing

The Medical Center's Ryan White Program, along with the Charlottesville AIDS Services Group and the Charlottesville/Albemarle Health Department, hosted a free HIV testing event for University students and city and county residents yesterday. The service coincided with World AIDS Day.

More than 100 people showed up to receive confidential testing at the Medical Center's largest annual testing event, the motto for which this year was "Respect and Protect," said Pamela Bickley, program coordinator for the University's Ryan White Program.

"The main thing is to come get tested," Bickley said. "By respecting and protecting ourselves and others we can help stop the spread of HIV."

Bickley noted that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that anyone between the ages of 13 and 64 should be tested if they are having or have had unprotected sex.

The Ryan White Program is the largest federal program designed to provide care and services for those infected with HIV and their families. Congress appropriates funding each year to cities, states and providers - such as the University's Medical Center - to fulfill the program's mission.
