Death by sitting

A recent study has established a connection between sitting for long periods of time and mortality. The Pennington Biomedical Research Center observed 17,000 people, aged 15 to 90, during a period of 20 years. The subjects were asked to rate how long they spent sitting each day.

Though some of the causes of death were cardiovascular, respiratory or digestive-related, subjects who died usually had a higher body mass index and were less physically active. But researchers noted that even people who exercised periodically but remained sitting for much of the day had a higher risk of mortality. Occasional physical activity, even above the minimum recommended amounts, cannot make up for sitting for the remainder of the day, the study concluded.
