Heavy snow bends roof of North Grounds building

Estimated reading time: 0 minutes

The North Grounds Recreation Center reopened at 5:30 this morning after having been closed because of safety concerns caused by the heavy snow accumulation on its roof.

The roof of the facility is designed to bend and did so "significantly" because of the weight of the snow, said Chief Facilities Officer Donald Sundgren, whose department advised intramural sports to close the building.

Nevertheless, the weather since has allowed the facility to reopen.

"We had some good help from the sunshine [yesterday] in melting the snow," Sundgren said.

All other University recreation facilities have remained open.

"All of our buildings are doing really well right now," said Kelly Bernier, assistant director of fitness programs.
