Hospital plans new rehabilitative, outpatient center

Hospital continues to collect contributions for project to consolidate care facilities

The University's Children's Hospital has unveiled plans for a new rehabilitative and outpatient care facility that is scheduled to be completed by 2013.

Currently, the hospital's rehabilitative and outpatient care facilities are located in various areas of Charlottesville, said Kaye Forsman, the hospital's development director.

The new building will consolidate these facilities, placing them next to the hospital's main building, where inpatient care is currently conducted, Forsman added.

"The main benefit is for the patients, that they won't have to go from one facility to another. They will be able to get all the service they need in one building," said Peter Jump, the University Health System's director of public relations.

The hospital still is collecting donations to obtain the $147 million needed for the project. Thus far, $132 million has been raised, with $109 million coming from the Medical Center. Fundraising will cover the remaining costs, Forsman said.

"There has been constant progress" toward the project's completion, Forsman said, adding that floor plans and architectural designs have already been selected.

The new facility will bear the name Barry and Bill Battle Building, in honor of late University alumnus Bill Battle and his wife Barry, who spearheaded a $15 million donation from the Ivy Foundation, Forsman said.
