People all across Charlottesville spent yesterday celebrating the birth of the University's founder - Thomas Jefferson - who would have turned 267 years-old.
A celebration was held at Monticello in conjunction with the University in honor of Jefferson's birthday and his achievements. Jefferson's former home hosted ceremonies on the West Lawn, as well as a speech by Joseph Neubauer, one of the recipients of the 2010 Thomas Jefferson Foundation Medal in Citizen Leadership.
Neubauer was just one of three recipients of the Thomas Jefferson Foundation Medals, which were presented on Grounds. Neubauer received the award in citizen leadership, while Edward Wilson received the award in architecture. Janet Napolitano received the award in law.
The University also held its annual Founder's Day Tree Planting Ceremony, which is meant to honor an individual who has played an important role in shaping the University.
