Who: Researchers from the Human Communication Technologies Lab at the University of British Columbia working to provide users with a handheld device that offers a virtual experience similar to being in a fish tank without the use of 3-D glasses
What: The pCubee is a device that uses five liquid crystal display screens in a cube diaphragm that, along with a physics simulation, give gamers the illusion that they are playing with the virtual objects inside. Users can hold either a regular computer mouse or a stylus, which responds to motion, to interact with the objects inside the cube. The pCubee operates through the principle of motion parallax, which is the change in the perception of an object's position, depending on the direction it is viewed.
The Future: Researchers hope this device will be used in gaming, storytelling, education and mapping - particularly mapping of internal organ systems.
