Technology of the week: electric airplanes

Who: Slovenian electric airplane company Pipestrel, which has already taken orders for a two-seater plane.

What: As interest in electric cars continues to increase, so has the drive to develop more efficient airplanes by developing electric engine technology that is three to four times more efficient at driving the propeller. Furthermore, these planes are much quieter and offer better energy conservation.

Future: With the military showing interests in electric planes, there will be a growing impetus to develop more efficient and cost-effective forms for these planes. These planes will help reduce the need for fossil fuels, and NASA'S Green Flight Challenge program has endorsed the planes.
