The third-ranked Virginia field hockey team opened up conference play Friday with a 3-2 overtime victory at No. 12 Boston College (6-3, 0-2 ACC). Junior forward Paige Selenski scored the game-winning goal four minutes into overtime, notching her 12th goal of the season and fourth game-winning goal of the year.
Virginia (9-0, 1-0 ACC) surged to a 2-0 lead during the first half with goals by freshman forward Elly Buckley and junior midfielder Michelle Vittese. The Eagles, however, came back late in the second half with a score by sophomore defender Jacqui Moorfield and then a buzzer-beater by freshman midfielder Paige Norris in the 58th and 70th minutes, respectively.
The Cavaliers capped off the road trip Sunday with a win in Ithaca, N.Y., bringing down Cornell 5-2. After going into halftime tied at 1-1, Virginia rattled off four unanswered goals during the second half to put away the game.
Buckley and Selenski both scored two goals, while senior midfielder Haley Carpenter scored her first goal of the season.\nVirginia opens the home portion of its ACC schedule next Friday against No. 2 Maryland. Game time is set for 5 p.m.
