ISC hosts formal recruitment kickoff

ISC

The Inter-Sorority Council kicked off its formal recruitment process yesterday evening with its annual "Go Greek Night."

The event, held in Newcomb Ballroom, was a chance for women at the University, particularly first-year students, to find out more about the process of joining an ISC sorority.

"The Contact Policy doesn't allow us to speak to first-years, so this gives an unbiased opinion of what sororities are like and a briefing of everybody," said third-year Commerce student Lauren Ely, who staffed an information table at the event.

At the event, it was important to show female students what it means to be a part of the University Greek community by emphasizing its commitment to the areas of scholarship, service and philanthropy, sisterhood, leadership and social activities, said Alexis Tarbet, the ISC's co-chair for public relations.

Although the event was intended mostly for first-year students, it also was open to any upperclass women who were curious about the recruitment process.

Second-year College student Elizabeth Garrett was one of those individuals, and she said she attended the meeting "looking for a way to be more involved with the University community."

Linde Groover, recruitment counselor director for the ISC, answered many questions at the beginning of the meeting, which included topics ranging from stereotypes to the recruiting process and the financial obligations of going Greek.

Members from each of the ISC's 16 sororities set up tables across the ballroom, giving attendees the opportunity to inquire further into the diverse experiences that each of the groups offer.

Other Greek councils at the University will hold similar events to launch into their recruiting periods for the year.

David Replogle, the Inter-Fraternity Council's chairman for public relations and a Cavalier Daily staff writer, said IFC representatives visit dormitories late in the fall semester for dorm talks, which "function as information sessions for first-year men who are interested in fraternity life during their time at the University."

For the ISC, formal recruitment opened earlier than usual this year, Tarbet said, because the snow delays last year generated issues with many participants' academic schedules.

"Greek priorities should never interfere with academic priorities, so we are excited to have an earlier recruitment this year," she said.

Female students have until Dec. 4 to register for formal recruitment, which can be done on the ISC website.

In mid-December, registered participants will meet with recruitment counselors working on behalf of the ISC rather than their specific sororities. These counselors aim to provide unbiased assistance with the rushing and pledging process that begins immediately following Winter Break, Groover said.

First-year College student Katie Veneziano, who plans to rush next semester, said she found the event to be a worthwhile resource.

"It supplied a lot of good information and gave you people to speak to before [rush]," she said.
