This Saturday, the University will participate in the Game Day Recycling Challenge, a month-long competition at various colleges, to collect as many recyclables as possible during a home football game.
Before the game, student volunteers will visit different tailgating areas and distribute plastic bags to participants, sustainability outreach coordinator Nina Morris said. After the game, volunteers will return to these areas and collect the bags with recyclables.
The University joins Virginia Tech, Harvard, Duke and more than 70 other universities for the competition, which was first conducted last year.
Morris said the program's goal is to engage community members and raise awareness about recycling and sustainability.
"We hope to increase our recycling rate at athletic games and help people realize that a lot of things that they use are actually recyclable." For instance, the University collects plastic types 1 through 7, not just 1 or 2, she said.
The program was designed by the Environmental Protection Agency.
