What: A colossal airship designed to lift entire buildings and transport them thousands of miles may be the solution to sending large pieces of equipment to remote areas and sites of natural disasters. Defying the traditional shapes of air balloons and blimps, the airship's balloon disc shape, 500 feet in size, protects it from prevailing winds and allows for easier, parachute-like descents.
Who: SkyLifter, an Australian firm, designed the prototype Betty, which is capable of carrying objects weighing more than a pound. The firm plans to build larger versions during the next three years.
The Future: SkyLifter hopes to create airships capable of lifting objects up to 150 tons, seven times the amount the most powerful helicopter is capable of lifting. The airship should be able to carry these loads as far as 1,200 miles at a speed of 50 miles per hour, and thus might even be able to carry entire disaster-relief centers or hospitals to remote areas.
