The top-ranked men's tennis team began its dual match season last night with a 12-1 win against No. 75 William & Mary. The Tribe, which has excelled in Colonial Athletic Association play but has not beaten the Cavaliers since 2002, was dominated on all fronts against Virginia, whose lineup includes seven players ranked in the nation's top 125. The two teams agreed upon an alternative scoring method in advance, playing five singles matches and eight doubles matches, each worth one point toward the final score.
Freshman Alex Domijan, the country's top recruit who has risen to No. 3 in the national singles rankings in four short months, dispatched William & Mary's Ben Guthrie at the No. 2 position in two quick sets, 6-1, 6-1. Playing behind Domijan at the No. 3 position, senior Sanam Singh earned a rare 6-0, 6-0 win against the Tribe's Sebastien Vidal.
In doubles play, senior Michael Shabaz and junior Drew Courtney - the No. 3 doubles team in the country and defending title-holders in the NCAA doubles tournament - continued to play in fine form, topping Guthrie and Anton Andersson, 8-3.
The Cavaliers' lone loss came at the No. 5 doubles slot, where sophomore Brian Fang and redshirt sophomore Reese Milner fell, 8-1.
The Cavaliers will continue their nine-match homestand Friday against No. 16 Illinois and Sunday against No. 36 Notre Dame and unranked Eastern Kentucky.
