The first Charlottesville homicide of 2011 occurred early yesterday morning. David Lee Cowan was shot and killed near Run Street in the Westhaven neighborhood, Charlottesville Police Lt. Ronnie Roberts said. At approximately 2:45 a.m., the district officer patrolling the area heard gunshots and proceeded to investigate, Roberts said. Law enforcement pronounced the 30-year-old dead at the scene.
The police notified the victim's family and transported Cowan's body to the state medical examiner's office in Richmond for an autopsy. Currently there are no suspects and no further details available about the ongoing investigation, Roberts said.\nHomicides occur infrequently in the Charlottesville area, he added. In 2010, there were only three homicide cases, and there were none in 2009.
The police are continuing to work on the case and have asked anyone with information to call Crimestoppers at 434-977-4000.
