Football player may face Honor charges

Virginia football player Devin Wallace failed to disclose a prior arrest to the University, which is a violation of University Standards of Conduct. As a result, Wallace could face expulsion from the University.

Wallace, a sophomore cornerback, was arrested at James Madison University Sept. 17 for underage purchase and possession of alcohol during the team's bye week. Harrisonburg courts ruled Wallace guilty in absentia. This conviction came to light last week when Wallace and two teammates were charged with counts of assault, battery and burglary stemming from an alleged altercation that also occurred at James Madison.

All University students are mandated to notify the University within 72 hours of any criminal arrests or convictions, apart from minor traffic violations.

Student-athletes, meanwhile, are required to notify their coaches within 24 hours. Wallace did not disclose his prior arrest to coach Mike London, University spokesperson Carol Wood said in an e-mail. Wallace started during Virginia's next game, a 48-7 win against Virginia Military Institute.

"A failure to comply with the self-disclosure procedure or an intentionally false response could be subject to being referred to the Honor Committee for investigation and further action," Wood said. "In addition, a failure to comply with the self-disclosure procedure could be referred to the University Judiciary Committee for a hearing based upon an allegation that such failure represents a violation of the University's Standards of Conduct."

Students have been required to disclose all arrests since 2004. This past August, the Office of the Dean of Students initiated a new NetBadge prompt to increase safety in response to the death of Yeardley Love.

Those accused of any offense will go through an investigation to determine whether or not his action can be classified as an honor code violation, according to the Honor Committee website. If a case is held, the defendant could face expulsion from the University or degree dismissal upon conviction. It is unclear whether Wallace has been formally accused because the Committee does not discuss specific cases with the public.

London suspended Wallace and two teammates from the football team immediately after their arrests.
