Nobody is giving Virginia wrestling a chance.
The Cavaliers (15-5, 2-0 ACC) will travel to Blacksburg this weekend, where the No. 7 Hokies (15-4, 2-0 ACC) are in the midst of one of their most promising seasons ever. Virginia Tech enters the match coming off a marquee victory against perennial powerhouse No. 12 Lehigh, a team that dismantled the Cavaliers earlier in the season. Virginia has not beat the Hokies since 2007 - coach Steve Garland's first season with team - but the Cavaliers are embracing their underdog role.
"Everybody on the outside thinks we're going to go in there and not win too many matches, but we've just been in here 'mindless training' as coach says," freshman Joe Spisak said. "Every single one of our starters is a scraper, and every single person in our program is going in there thinking we're going to win this thing."
Virginia has reason to be confident, as the team comes to the match riding an impressive three-match win streak. The Cavaliers have weathered a series of injuries and are finally getting some of their hurt athletes back - none more important than redshirt sophomore Jedd Moore.
