The top-ranked Virginia men's tennis team bowled over two ACC foes this weekend by topping No. 29 Miami and No. 46 Florida State, each by a score of 7-0.
After struggling through doubles points during the past several matches, the Cavalier doubles teams appeared to hit their stride against Miami (10-5, 4-1 ACC) as they easily won each contest. The closest match came at the No. 1 position, where the nation's No. 3-ranked doubles pairing of senior Michael Shabaz and junior Drew Courtney won 8-4. No singles player lost a set against Miami, and freshman Alex Domijan, playing No. 1 singles for the Cavaliers, whipped through Miami's top player, senior Christian Blocker, 6-4, 6-0.
Against Florida State (6-10, 1-4 ACC), Virginia's doubles teams played two tight matches at No. 1 and No. 2, both of which were decided in tiebreakers. Virginia (20-0, 5-0 ACC) then cycled through its singles matches quickly, with only Courtney, at No. 4 singles, and sophomore Julen Uriguen, at No. 5, running into trouble. Courtney won his first set after a marathon 11-9 tiebreaker, then won the second, 6-1. Uriguen battled back after losing the second set, 6-1, to take the final set, 6-4.
The Cavaliers concluded their 11-match road trip and return home this weekend for their first outdoor matches in Charlottesville this season. They face No. 9 Duke Friday at 3 p.m. and No. 15 North Carolina Sunday at 1 p.m. at the Snyder Tennis Center.
