Student dies after falling from roof

University Police cite slippery conditions as factors in Gilliam

First-year College student Thomas Gilliam IV died upon arrival at the University Medical Center Sunday night after falling from the Physics Building shortly before 11:30 p.m., according to a University Police statement released yesterday morning.

A second police statement released last night revealed that the fall in part was caused by slippery conditions on the roof of the Physics Building. University Police Lt. Melissa Fielding explained in the release that "when Mr. Gilliam tried to walk along a part of the shingled roof he was unable to keep his footing and fell 40 feet to the concrete below."

Dean of Students Allen Groves issued a statement confirming that Gilliam died from the injuries he sustained from the fall. Fielding said the investigation is ongoing.
