The No. 17 Virginia women's tennis team recorded two upset victories against No. 12 Clemson and No. 13 Georgia Tech this past weekend to clinch a first-round bye in this week's ACC Tournament.
With the wins, the Cavaliers (18-6, 7-4 ACC) set a new school record for conference wins with seven, matched their previous single season win record with 18 and collected the first road wins against top-15 opponents in program history.
During Saturday's 4-3 win against the Tigers (18-9, 6-5), the Cavaliers swept the doubles matchups - including a contest against the nation's No. 3 tandem - for a slight 1-0 advantage prior to singles play. But Clemson rallied to steal five of the first six singles sets en route to taking three of the first five singles contests.
With the overall score knotted at three, team victory hinged on the match between Virginia sophomore Hana Tomljanovic and Clemson freshman Klara Vyskocilova on the No. 3 court. Tomljanovic split the first two sets with her foe but then jumped out to a 6-0 lead during the third set tiebreaker and secured the Cavaliers' victory with a 7-6 win.
The Cavaliers then posted a decisive 6-1 victory Sunday against the Yellow Jackets (12-9, 5-6). Five of Virginia's six singles players notched personal victories, including two upset wins by junior Lindsey Hardenbergh and sophomore Erin Vierra.
The Cavaliers now return home to begin preparation for the ACC Tournament quarterfinals slated to begin April 21 in Cary, N.C.
