Tech of the week: MIT

What: The Mood Meter is a computer which uses facial algorithms to recognize the facial expressions of people walking by, and assigns them a mood level. On the side of the screen there is a happiness meter which documents the percentage of smiling people in a specific area and, based on these percentages, records the happiest locations on the Massachusetts Institute of Technology campus on an online map.

Who: Graduate students at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology have created the Mood Meter to help document the happiness level of students around campus.

The Future: Many marketing companies are closely considering how technology similar to the Mood Meter can be used to observe customers reactions to different products as they shop.
