The No. 2 Virginia men's tennis team overpowered No. 46 South Florida, 8-1, this weekend at the Royal Palm Tennis Club in Miami to open its season in style.
The Cavaliers (1-0) swept all four doubles matches, which featured an alternative scoring format in which the first team to win eight games claimed the victory. Junior Jarmere Jenkins teamed with senior Drew Courtney to defeat South Florida sophomore Federico Sabogal and senior Wael Kilani, 8-2, in the top doubles slot.
The tandem of sophomore Justin Shane and senior Philippe Oudshoorn - ranked No. 13 in the country for doubles - trounced sophomore Sebastian Hagn and junior Lucas Marin-Salcedo, 8-2, on the third court. The duos of sophomore Alex Domijan and senior Steven Eelkman Rooda and of sophomore Ian Uriguen and freshman Mitchell Frank won in the second and fourth slots, respectively.
Virginia proved equally dominant in the singles competition, dropping just one of eight matches and only four sets overall. No. 1 Frank, playing in the third singles slot for the Cavaliers, tightened his grip on the national top spot with a commanding 6-0, 6-2 win against junior Juan Carlos Acuna Gerard. No. 11 Jenkins, No. 57 Shane, Domijan and Courtney also prevailed in straight sets to round out the Cavaliers top five slots. The Bulls' (0-1) freshman Oliver Pramming prevented a total Virginia sweep, defeating senior Santiago Villegas 7-6(3), 0-6, 7-5 to clinch South Florida's lone win.
Virginia returns to action the weekend of Feb. 3-5 for a crucial series of home-opening matches against No. 19 Texas, No. 8 Florida and No. 11 Texas A&M.
