For the second consecutive game, the No. 1 Virginia men's lacrosse team fell behind in the first quarter to a heavy underdog at home. But Dom Starsia's loaded squad managed to clinch a 12-5 win against Stony Brook Saturday, pushing the team's winning streak to eight dating back to last season's NCAA championship run.
Senior goaltender Rob Fortunato enjoyed the best game of his college career, and the offense exploded for a barrage of spectacular goals to spur the Cavaliers (3-0, 0-0 ACC) to victory.
"It was a great win for us," redshirt senior defender Matt Lovejoy said. "We got rolling offensively, and obviously it's always a good game for us defensively when you only allow five goals."
Though redshirt senior midfield Colin Briggs provided the game's most striking offensive performance with a career-high seven points, it was senior attacker Steele Stanwick who stole the headlines. Stanwick notched another two goals and three assists, bringing his career totals to 101 and 100, respectively. Stanwick is the third Cavalier of all time - joining Kevin Pehlke (1990-1993) and Danny Glading (2006-2009) - and the 44th player in NCAA history to register 100 goals and 100 assists for his career.
"It's obviously a great honor just to get that [mark]," Stanwick said. "You're mentioning some of the guys that have done that so I'm really humbled by it, but obviously it's a team sport. I couldn't do anything without my teammates so a lot has to go out to them."
Starsia lauded Stanwick's milestone during what has already been a remarkable career.
"It's one of the joys of my job that I get to work with young men like Steele Stanwick," Starsia said. "He's on a short list of the very best [attackmen] I've ever coached."
