The University Board of Elections notified the student body in an email yesterday of a technical glitch which occurred with its website. Voters who cast ballots between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. yesterday must recast their vote.
Soon after the start of voting yesterday morning an error occurred "preventing voters from saving their selections for candidates who they wished to vote for," UBE Chair Jessica Hassanzadeh said in an email.
Voters contacted UBE about the glitch, and the UBE responded by temporarily suspending the elections to address the issue, Hassanzadeh said. The UBE moved the conclusion of the voting period from Thursday 4 p.m. to Friday 1 p.m. to make up for the lost voting time, according to the UBE website.
"By increasing the time of the election period, we are accounting for any lost votes," the UBE stated in its email to the student body. "Similarly, the Board of Elections is working to disseminate this message to the University community to account for any voters who may have voted on Monday morning."
The UBE said the software issue will not affect its ability to run a fair election.
"While we understand that this morning's issue has caused concern for voters and candidates alike, we remain committed to facilitating a fair and credible election process," Hassanzadah said. "By restarting the election and extending the voting period, we believe we are able to provide the best response to this morning's issue."
No information was released about whether the UBE thinks this error will affect voter participation.
The UBE plans to announce election results Friday 4 p.m. in Monroe Hall 124.
