The Board of Visitors met Wednesday morning in Richmond to conduct an annual review of University President Teresa Sullivan’s performance.
“This meeting will be held in closed session for the purpose of conducting a routine annual evaluation of the President,” the Board posted on its website. “There is no action that will come out of the meeting. There will not be an opportunity for comments from the public at this meeting.”
University spokesperson McGregor McCance said in an email that the meeting records were not available for public comment or review because they constitute a personnel evaluation.
“These evaluations and records are exempt under FOIA and are not public,” McCance said in the email. “Though the actual evaluations are not public, there certainly are some strong indications of areas of emphasis that will be playing a role in future evaluations of the President.”
McCance said the Board and Sullivan are focused on faculty compensation, strategic plan development and furthering the University’s research efforts.
“[T]he Board believes it is important for the annual evaluation of the President to include benchmarks related to the University’s annually updated strategic plan,” a resolution passed by the Board Nov. 9 stated.
McCance said the meeting was held in Richmond because University Rector Helen Dragas and Board members George Martin and Alan Diamonstein, among others, found the location more convenient than coming to Charlottesville.
The Board on Nov. 9 approved a one-year extension of Sullivan’s contract. She will now serve through July 2016. The contract extension specified Sullivan would be evaluated regularly based on “benchmarks” and discussions of contract renewal would conclude before Jan. 31, 2015.
