Track team kicks off outdoor season

Hazzard, Kostelac prepare to try new events at Virginia Cup

The Virginia Track and Field team opens up its outdoor season with a home meet at Lannigan Field at this Saturday’s Virginia Cup. The team will host fellow in-state rivals James Madison, Liberty, Radford and VCU.

The Cavaliers are coming off an impressive showing at the NCAA Indoor National Championships. The men’s Distance Medley Relay of sophomore Payton Hazzard and juniors Anthony Kostelac, Taylor Gilland and Brandon Burton took 10th place, while senior Dallas Rose took 13th in the triple jump.

Hazzard will be testing new waters this weekend when he moves up to compete in the 800. Hazzard set the school record this winter in the 400 meter dash, his usual specialty, with a clocking of 47.17 seconds. He is essentially trading events with Kostelac, the 800 meter force who will be running the 400 this Saturday.

Sophomore Christian Lavorgna will be especially busy at this meet, competing in five events. Lavorgna will be in the field for shot put, discus and pole vault, and will test out his speed on the track by running the 110 meter hurdles and a leg on the 4×400 relay.

After notching a fourth place finish at the ACC Indoor Championships in the pentathlon, multi-event specialist junior Anna Finger will kick off her outdoor season in several events for the Cavaliers. Also looking for a top finish will be freshman sprinter Peyton Channey, who started her first year of collegiate running with an impressive showing at the ACC Indoors.

The Cavaliers’ season continues with another home meet next weekend.
