Men's Golf takes second place in opening tournament

McCarthy finishes fourth overall in Northern Intercollegiate in Illinois

In its first taste of action in 2013, the Virginia men’s golf team found success in Sugar Grove, Ill. with a second-place finish at the Northern Intercollegiate. Junior Denny McCarthy paced the Cavaliers with a fourth place individual finish at 2-under.

Virginia opened the tournament in fourth place, carding a 289 to sit behind Liberty, Kentucky and Houston. Freshman Jimmy Stanger shot a team-best 70, three strokes behind round one leader David Snyder of Kentucky. McCarthy was one stroke behind Stanger in 11th place, while junior David Pastore opened in 19th place with a 72.

The Cavaliers were able to move up the leaderboard in Saturday’s second round despite shooting a 3-over 291. Kentucky’s 303 derailed the Wildcats’ hopes for the title and allowed Virginia to climb to third. McCarthy shot an even-par 72 to move to seventh overall, while Stanger’s 74 dropped him to tenth.

Sunday saw Virginia’s lowest score for the tournament with a 287, giving the Cavaliers enough momentum to push past Houston for a second place finish behind Central Florida. The Golden Knight’s score of 283 was the best for the day, and propelled them from fourth to first place. Virginia had three golfers finish in the top 10 individually, as McCarthy used a final-round 70 to finish fourth, while Stanger and junior Ji Soo Park finished tied for ninth.

Virginia is next in action in two weeks as it travels to Nashville, Tenn. for the Dick’s Sporting Goods Challenge Cup, with the first round starting Sept. 20.
