While every acoustic and folk lover flocked to the local Lockn music festival this past weekend, the electro-rock lovers stayed behind to attend a pair of shows at the Southern Café and Music Hall.
Friday night featured Pissed Jeans, a noise rock band and a pioneer of the recent punk revival based out of Allentown, Penn. Formed in 2004, the band operates under Sub Pop, a highly regarded record label founded in the ’80s that famously signed Nirvana.
On Saturday night, the Southern introduced Suuns, a Canadian duo formed in 2006. The Suuns is a grunge rock band heavily influenced by the electronic genre. Though less prolific, the duo has gained a following within both the electronic and rock indie spheres. Whatever separates the bands in genre, each made up for this weekend in volume.
The Southern may be a modest venue, operating under the radar to less fanfare, but it is hugely versatile. Where The Jefferson brings in high-profile indie and country artists, the Southern collects the lesser-known but not necessarily lesser-acclaimed acts. Whenever it manages to snag acts that usually only play major urban venues — like the wall-rattling electro-pop and noise-rock acts from this weekend — Charlottesville residents should count themselves lucky and check the artists out. Just consider bringing earplugs.
