The Virginia women’s basketball team lost 66-38 to No. 8 North Carolina State Sunday afternoon at home.
The Wolfpack (17-0, 4-0 ACC) began the game on an 11-2 run and started the second quarter on an 11-1 run to build a 31-15 halftime advantage. Virginia (7-10, 1-3 ACC) only made one field goal in the entire second quarter on a jumper by junior small forward Jocelyn Willoughby.
Willoughby led the Cavaliers with 15 points on the day, the only Virginia player to reach double figures. Two Virginia starters, sophomore guard Brianna Tinsley and junior forward Lisa Jablonowski, failed to register a single point.
Virginia senior forward Moné Jones went five-for-six from the free throw line to finish with 7 points, good for joint second on the team with junior guard Dominique Toussaint.
In the third quarter, N.C. State began to pull away even further, going ahead by as many as 28 points, 47-19, before Virginia freshman guard Erica Martinsen hit a deep three-pointer — her only field goal of the day.
The Cavaliers went on an 8-2 run, with a three-point play by Willoughby and a three-pointer and layup by Toussaint. However, that would not be enough to overcome the Wolfpack, the last undefeated team remaining in Division I women’s basketball.
Virginia next plays on the road on Thursday against No. 4 Louisville at 7 p.m.
