The No. 12 Virginia women’s lacrosse team defeated Richmond 19-5 Thursday afternoon at Robins Stadium in Richmond.

The Spiders (1-1, 0-0 Atlantic 10) got off to a fast start, scoring two goals within the first three minutes of the game. The Cavaliers (3-0, 0-0 ACC) were able to cut the deficit to one after a goal from senior midfielder Maggie Jackson, but Richmond answered to take a 3-1 lead with 24:22 left in the first half.

From that point on, it was all Virginia, as the Cavaliers scored six unanswered goals to head into halftime with a 7-3 lead.

The second half started off much like the first one, as an early goal from Richmond made the score 7-4. However, Virginia once again went on a major run, scoring the game’s next 12 goals. After scoring 34 seconds into the second half, Richmond was unable to find the back of the net until 5:56 remaining in the game.

Eleven players scored for the Cavaliers, led by hat tricks from junior midfielder Sammy Mueller and freshman midfielder Lillie Kloak. Mueller and Jackson tallied the most points for Virginia with four apiece. Junior goalkeeper Charlie Campbell stopped 12 of 16 shots on goal from the Spiders, tying a career-high in saves.

The game was originally scheduled to take place Wednesday but was postponed to Thursday due to inclement weather.

Virginia improves to 3-0 on the season for the second consecutive year. The Cavaliers return to Klöckner Stadium Saturday to face No. 8 Princeton at 1 p.m.
