The No. 12 Virginia women’s lacrosse team defeated No. 9 Princeton 14-9 Saturday at Turf Field in Charlottesville.

The Cavaliers (4-0, 0-0 ACC) scored three consecutive goals to begin the game, opening up a 3-0 lead less than five minutes in. The Tigers (1-1, 0-0 Ivy League) responded with three goals of their own to tie the game up midway through the first half.

Virginia scored two goals to retake the lead, but Princeton answered with another three-goal run to head into halftime with a 6-5 advantage.

Virginia, however, opened the second half with four consecutive goals to grab a 9-6 lead with 15:25 to play. Princeton, again, had the answer, responding with three goals in a three-minute span to tie it at nine with 11:21 remaining.

Sophomore midfielder Ashlyn McGovern scored the go-ahead goal for the Cavaliers with 8:55 left, and the team tacked on four more goals to seal the win.

Junior midfielder Sammy Mueller starred for the Cavaliers, tying a career-high with six goals. Senior midfielder Maggie Jackson and freshman midfielder Annie Dyson each added two goals. Junior goalkeeper Charlie Campbell stopped 7 out of 16 shots on goal from Princeton.

This was the second game Virginia had this week affected by inclement weather. Saturday’s game was originally scheduled to take place at Klöckner Stadium at 1 p.m. However, rain pushed the start time up to 11 a.m. and forced the game to be moved to Turf Field.

The Cavaliers are now 4-0, reaching that mark for the second consecutive season. Virginia returns to action Tuesday at 5 p.m. with a road contest in Williamsburg at Martin Family Stadium at Albert-Daly Field against William and Mary.
