The Virginia baseball team (21-16, 8-10 ACC) got swept by Miami (25-12, 10-8 ACC) in a three-game home series over the weekend at Disharoon Park.
Game 1: Miami 9, Virginia 6
The two teams played a doubleheader Saturday due to inclement weather Friday and the Hurricanes won the first game 9-6.
The Cavaliers jumped out to the early lead in the bottom of the second inning on a sacrifice fly by senior first baseman Nate Eikhoff and a single by senior designated hitter Jack Weiller.
However, Miami scored five runs in the top of the third, including a three-run homer by freshman right fielder Adrian Del Castillo. The score remained 5-2 until the sixth inning, when Miami scored three more to go ahead 8-2.
In the bottom of the sixth, Weiller hit an RBI double to score freshman third baseman Zack Gelof, then scored on a single by junior catcher Logan Michaels.
Virginia added two more in the seventh, including an RBI sac fly by Gelof to cut the Miami lead to two runs. However, Miami freshman outfielder Jordan Lala hit a solo homer in the eighth for a final score of 9-6.
Game 2: Miami 2, Virginia 1
The Cavaliers lost again in the second game of the doubleheader, a 2-1 pitcher’s duel.
Sophomore right-hander Griff McGarry started on the mound for Virginia, going 6.2 innings and allowing two runs on four hits but was still tagged with the loss. Sophomore left-hander Andrew Abbott pitched the rest of the game, surrendering two hits in 2.1 innings.
Miami went ahead 1-0 in the fourth on a double by sophomore center fielder Tony Jenkins, then added another in the sixth on a solo home run by sophomore third baseman Raymond Gil.
Virginia’s only run came in their half of the sixth, when an RBI groundout by sophomore left fielder Brendan Rivoli scored sophomore right fielder Alex Tappen.
Game 3: Miami 3, Virginia 1
Miami completed the sweep Sunday afternoon with a 3-1 victory.
The Hurricanes scored first on a home run by freshman pinch hitter JP Gates in the fourth inning, then sophomore catcher Michael Amditis added two more with a homer in the sixth.
Virginia’s only run came in the bottom of the seventh on a triple by freshman second baseman Nic Kent, scoring junior left fielder Cayman Richardson.
The Virginia bullpen pitched the entire game in lieu of freshman right-hander Mike Vasil, the scheduled starter. Abbott made his first start of the season and faced the first four Hurricane hitters of the game, allowing a single hit. Sophomore right-hander Kyle Whitten pitched four innings of relief, allowing two runs on three hits.
