The No. 6 Virginia women’s soccer team continued its winning streak with its fourth straight victory of the season over No. 12 West Virginia Sunday afternoon.
The Cavaliers (4-0-0, 0-0-0 ACC) recorded three goals in the first half and tacked on an own-goal in the second to produce a 4-1 final. Freshman forward Diana Ordonez added two goals against the Mountaineers (2-2-0, 0-0-0 Big 12), extending her goal streak to four games.
Early on, in the sixth minute, Ordonez put Virginia on the board with a shot to the far post. Sophomore forward Rebecca Jarrett passed the ball to Ordonez but the freshman’s attempt to pass to senior forward Meghan McCool was deflected. The freshman quickly retrieved the ball in the box and found the back of the net to give the Cavaliers the lead.
Ordonez struck again in the 16th minute. This time, sophomore defender Claire Constant drove the ball into the box as Ordonez ran down the middle of the field. After a failed clearing attempt, Ordonez gathered the ball and sidestepped a West Virginia defender to give herself a clean shot past the keeper.
In the 33rd minute, sophomore forward Alexa Spaanstra added a third goal for Virginia. Spaanstra fired a long-range strike that cleared senior goalkeeper Rylee Foster’s head and finished in the top right corner.
Seventeen minutes later, Jarret supplied a hard cross that met the foot of a Mountaineer defender and resulted in an own goal to extend the Virginia lead to 4-0.
West Virginia placed more pressure on the Virginia defense late in the second half. In the 72nd minute, the Cavaliers were unable to clear the ball and freshman forward Nicole Payne found room to send a shot over the head of junior goalkeeper Laurel Ivory.
Neither team scored again as the game ended with a 4-1 Virginia win.
Virginia next plays No. 12 Georgetown (2-1-1, 0-0 Big East) at Klockner Stadium Thursday, Sept. 5. Kickoff is at 7 p.m.
