First-year Engineering student Nicholas Palatt passed away Friday morning, according to an email sent out to the University community by Dean of Students Allen Groves.
Palatt was from Aldie, Va. and intended on majoring in computer science. During his time at the University, he was involved in the Sailing Club at U.Va. and had pledged the Theta Delta Chi fraternity.
In high school, Palatt served as captain and co-founder of Student Congress, a competitive speech team. He also excelled in German, attending the 2018 Governor's World Language Academy, and spoke of learning American Sign Language in his admissions essay to the University.
Groves’ email included an excerpt from Palatt’s admissions essay, in which he explained his appreciation for language.
“Global literacy is something I really believe in," Palatt wrote. "As our world becomes more connected through technology, we should try to eliminate the many barriers which separate our communication.”
Palatt is survived by his parents, Elizabeth and Douglas Palatt, and his three siblings — Austin, Teagan and Calvin.
