The Inter-Sorority Council has canceled plans to host house tours in-person Thursday and Friday, per a message obtained by The Cavalier Daily. Instead, chapters will hold house tours virtually Friday — preferences and bid day will both remain in-person this weekend.
The ISC was “strongly advised against doing any in-person component to recruitment,” per a message sent by the ISC recruitment executive team to recruitment chairs.
During house tours, potential new members visit chapter houses. Preferences are the final round of recruitment and highlight sisterhood, allowing potential new members one final chance to talk with sisters before signing a bid card. On bid day, the women may receive a bid card from a sorority inviting them to become a new member. The day typically involves in-person gatherings of all the new and existing sorority members.
The ISC held its first weekend of recruitment online last Friday through Sunday. Originally, the ISC had planned to offer potential new members a virtual option for the second weekend, so that those who were uncomfortable with in-person events would still be able to participate virtually.
In the original plan, the second weekend would have included four rounds on Thursday evening and 10 rounds on Friday. Each in-person round would have been limited to 24 potential new members — during a typical year, there are no limits to the number of potential new members who can attend a round.
While the ISC continues to work with participants to update its recruitment schedule, the Inter-Fraternity Council has not changed its plans for the second week of recruitment.
Currently, the IFC has instituted a ban on eating and drinking indoors and virtual modifications to both the Final Hours — a three-hour event in which a rushee visits up to three of his top houses — and Bid Day — the day on which each fraternity delivers bids to the rushees they want to join their chapter.
Last year, more than 500 cases of COVID-19 were recorded after the recruitment cycle — while the University denied that recruitment had caused a significant spike in COVID-19 cases, cases were brought against five fraternities.
