LETTER: We stand with transgender and LGBTQ+ students, faculty and staff

We acknowledge that there is more work to be done beyond a simple collection of links, but we hope this offers individuals interested in supporting LGBTQ+ students a place to start.

We acknowledge the importance of supporting the LGBTQ+ community, especially in the face of anti-transgender rhetoric.

The 134th Cavalier Daily Editorial Board affirms the importance of supporting transgender and LGBTQ+ students, faculty and staff on Grounds, always and especially in the face of bigotry and anti-transgender rhetoric.

Nobody should ever feel unsafe at the place they call home. Our heartfelt thanks goes out to the undergraduate and graduate student organizations, faculty and University leadership who have continued to fight for LGBTQ+ students on Grounds and off. For anyone on Grounds who is queer, questioning or an ally, we offer a reminder of the below resources.

The LGBTQ Center at the University “seeks to foster the development of LGBTQ+ students, faculty, staff, alumni, and allies.” The Center’s physical location is on the third floor of Newcomb Hall, and offers a safe and comforting space for all students, whether questioning, queer or an ally. Events hosted by the Center include queer brunches, discussion groups for students of different identities and workshops.

U.Va. Health offers healthcare services for LGBTQ+ students, with services like LGB-specific health screenings, reproductive and sexual health support and transgender healthcare services including a commitment to gender-affirming care.

GLAAD offers resource lists categorized by topic, including ways to get involved politically, legal resources and resources for veterans.

The Trevor Project is an organization whose mission is to end suicide among LGBTQ+ youth, and it provides resources including hotline numbers and TrevorSpace, an international discussion platform for LGBTQ+ young people to find community.

Human Rights Campaign provides information and advice on a range of topics from coming out to allyship. The HRC recognizes the essential work that needs to be done in educating the public on the issues concerning LGBTQ+ people across the country.

Hoos for Inclusive Sexual Education group of UVA students advocating for LGBTQ+ sexual education in public school systems on the local, state, and federal level. HISE believes that sex-ed curriculum needs to be fact based, medically accurate, and it needs to include the LGBTQ community.

The Queer Student Union provides a “safe, welcoming, and confidential environment” for LGBTQ+ students on Grounds via service activities and social programs that seek to advocate for and celebrate queer culture on Grounds. Their upcoming events can be found at uva_qsu
