The Cavalier Daily elected editors for its upcoming 137th term Saturday, and in a contested election, chose Leigh Bailey, current operations manager and third-year College student, to serve as the paper’s next editor-in-chief. The 137th term of The Cavalier Daily will begin Jan. 12, the first day of classes in the spring semester.

Other members elected to the incoming Managing Board include Nina Broderick, current News senior associate and second-year College student, as managing editor; third-year Batten and College student Scarlett Sullivan, re-elected as executive editor; Shahnoor Chaudhry, current finance manager and second-year Commerce student, as chief financial officer; and Kayla Moore, current photo editor and third-year College and Batten, as operations manager. All races for the managing board, with the exception of operations manager, were contested.

Bailey joined The Cavalier Daily as a copy staffer during her first year at the University, and prior to her current role as operations manager, Bailey worked as website manager. As operations manager, Bailey oversees the nine operations desks: social media, photo, design, website, analytics, video, newsletter, Chinese translation and Spanish translation. The operations manager also supervises all aspects of production of the paper — such as establishing layout and design guidelines, maintaining necessary equipment and posting on social media. Bailey has also written articles on the news and sports desks.

Bailey succeeds fourth-year College student Naima Sawaya as editor-in-chief.

As she enters this role, Bailey hopes to use her operations background to continue enhancing the paper’s digital presence, as well as strengthen mentorship structures to define a collective purpose within the paper.

“The expertise and passion demonstrated by candidates across all sections of the paper today makes me confident that our varied skillsets will help us continue to advance the paper’s mission, long-term sustainability and service to the University community,” Bailey said.
