The series finale gave Virginia one last chance to salvage a win, and with both lineups having seen the opposing pitchers multiple times over the weekend, an offensive battle felt inevitable.
Virginia (31-6, 9-5 ACC) was handed a series sweep by Duke (28-11, 13-2 ACC) in the highest scoring game of the series. The Blue Devils delivered when it mattered most, coming through with runners in scoring position while the Cavaliers, despite tallying more hits, could not find the right moments to push runs across.
Action started immediately in the top of the second, when senior Jade Hylton broke the silence. With a runner on second and two strikes, Hylton, who had managed just one hit through the first two games of the series, delivered an RBI single to give Virginia the lead. It was the first time all series the Cavaliers had led to start a game.
Senior Eden Bigham got the start in the circle and responded with a strong inning of her own, pounding the zone and receiving a helping hand from freshman Jaiden Griffith, who made a diving catch in center to end the frame.
Griffith, along with freshman Hannah Tober and sophomore Madison Greene, was asked to shift positions and take on larger roles with junior Bella Cabral and senior Kassidy Hudson both out of the lineup.
Junior Macee Eaton kept the momentum going, leading off the next inning with a solo home run to extend the Virginia lead. Duke made their second pitching change of the game, but the Cavaliers kept the bats alive, tallying six hits across three innings despite leaving runs on the table.
Duke, characteristically, did not sit idly by.
Bigham, who had not issued a single walk all game, opened the bottom of the third with two walks, then hit a batter to load the bases. A subsequent walk brought in Duke's first run, and the damage did not stop there. A base hit up the middle scored two more, giving the Blue Devils a 3-2 lead with just one out recorded.
Senior Courtney Layne entered in relief, as she so often does, looking to limit the bleeding. But with runners on second and third, she surrendered a base-clearing triple to the left-center gap that pushed the Duke lead to 5-2. The Blue Devils added another run on a sacrifice fly before the six-run inning finally came to a close.
The Cavaliers, as they had shown all series, refused to go quietly. Hylton, now 2-for-2 on the day, crushed a no-doubt shot off the scoreboard for Virginia's second home run of the game, making it a two-run deficit and reigniting the comeback hopes. Griffith and Eaton followed with back-to-back hits to load the bases, but Duke worked out of the jam, recording two outs and stranding the runners. Sophomore Reagan Hickey delivered a two-out RBI single to cut the lead to two, though a baserunning error prevented any further scoring and ended the inning.
The trouble continued in the bottom of the inning. Layne allowed runners to reach second and third before a line drive found Greene in the outfield. Both runners tagged, and Greene's throw home arrived a beat too late, scoring one run. The ball got past Hickey on the exchange, allowing a second run to score and pushing the Duke lead to four.
Neither team scored again the rest of the way, but Virginia gave the crowd one final moment of tension in the seventh. The Cavaliers loaded the bases with a chance to make things interesting, but a game-ending diving catch in left field closed the door on any hopes of a comeback and handed Duke the sweep.
The sweep stings, and the numbers tell the story plainly. Time and time again Virginia put runners on base but could not deliver the timely hit needed to change the complexion of a game. Against a Duke team that punished every opportunity handed to them, those missed moments proved to be the difference and ultimately defined the series.
Virginia will look to reset quickly, returning to action Wednesday against Louisiana before turning their attention to a much bigger stage. Virginia Tech comes to town beginning Friday, with the series carrying serious weight in the ACC standings. After a humbling weekend, the Cavaliers will need to be a different team by next weekend.
