In the fall of 2000, William C. Eacho Jr. donated $1.4 million to the Virginia athletics department to establish a women's golf scholarship endowment. A 1945 Virginia graduate, Eacho envisioned the beginnings of a women's golf program at the University.

But an anonymous donor's $20 million gift on June 15 enabled the athletics department to proceed with formal planning, and the University now has a concrete outline for the future stadium.

The U.S. women's lacrosse World Cup team, which features five former Virginia players, won the 2001 International Federation of Women's Lacrosse Association World Cup on Sunday, when it defeated Australia, 14-8, in High Wycombe, England. It is the United States' fourth consecutive World Cup. The United States is undefeated in World Cup play since it began in 1986.
