The University’s Board of Visitors met in a special meeting Friday and officially appointed Scott Beardsley, current dean of the Darden School of Business, as the University’s 10th president. A group of University employees — composed primarily of members of the University’s chapters of the American Association of University Professors and United Campus Workers of Virginia — protested outside prior to the meeting’s start, chanting for the search’s halt due to what they called a shameful process.

After a five-month-long search, the Board of Visitors named Scott Beardsley the University of Virginia’s 10th President Dec. 19. This entire process was plagued by pushback from the Faculty Senate, nine of the University’s 14 academic deans, the Student Council, Gov.-elect Abigail Spanberger and other key stakeholders. Most of these critics cited concerns about the Board's legality and partisan lean, arguing that both of these factors could risk undermining its legitimacy if a president were appointed. By moving forward despite these widespread calls for delay, the Board sidelined key voices within the University community and concentrated power in a way Thomas Jefferson himself warned against — raising serious questions about the University’s adherence to its founding ideals.

With Christmas upon us, there is hardly a better time to gather family and friends to watch classic holiday films — many of which set an extraordinarily high bar for merry attire. The world of holiday fashion is infinitely diverse and filled with relentless red and green sparkles that can overwhelm many. With holiday parties to attend and shopping to be done, however, a piece of tasteful — or occasionally obnoxious — knitwear is a foolproof outfit choice for any festive event.

Coach Ryan Odom and his team knew that Maryland presented a greater challenge than the Terrapins’ (6-6, 0-2 Big Ten) record suggested. Even with star senior forward Pharrel Payne sidelined due to injury, Maryland played No. 2 Michigan competitively a week prior. As the former head coach at Virginia Tech, Coach Buzz Williams was no stranger to John Paul Jones Arena.

The documents, which cover legal work performed between April and August, show extensive attorney activity billed at rates approaching $1,000 per hour, though nearly all narrative descriptions of the work are redacted.

With the holiday season in full swing and a 10-day break in the rearview mirror, Virginia returned to John Paul Jones Arena Saturday to take on Winthrop. The Cavaliers (9-3, 1-0 ACC) annihilated the Eagles (7-7, 0-0 BSC) 88-53. Virginia controlled the game from start to finish, but it was a monster 41-point showing by junior guard Kymora Johnson that ultimately turned a commanding win into a demolition derby.

It’s been 16 years since James Cameron, titan of mainstream cinema, released the very first “Avatar,” which spawned a franchise that has grossed over $6 billion at the worldwide box office and netted four Academy Awards. “Avatar: Fire and Ash,” the franchise’s latest installment, was released Dec. 19, three years after the second film in the series, “Avatar: The Way of Water.”

By unanimous vote Friday, Scott Beardsley, dean of the Darden School of Business, will succeed former University President Jim Ryan. After months characterized by votes of no confidence and numerous protests, the Board chose to appoint the 10th president of the University on the last day of the fall semester — a day when most students had left for winter break. We, as a University community, should be exhausted by and furious at the Board’s continual refusal to prioritize any member of the community besides itself.

Every February, a group of 54 students entering their final year of undergraduate studies are accepted to live on the Lawn. Living in one of these rooms is supposed to be a privilege due to the Lawn’s history and prominence in University life. Due to this prestige, the experience is offered to students who have demonstrated service to the University or Charlottesville, as well as academic achievement. However, the incompatibility between getting a Lawn room and undergoing the University housing process creates harm for students trying to determine their fourth-year accommodations — especially when considering the off-Grounds housing market.

The year is 1973. Richard Nixon is president, gas costs just 36 cents per gallon and neither Virginia Coach Tony Elliott nor Missouri Coach Eliah Drinkwitz have been born. Yet, that is the only time before the 2025 Gator Bowl that their two programs have met on the gridiron.
