Sweaty palms. Rigid, fighting breaths. Tapping fingers. Pretending to look at my phone which, obviously, had no notifications. Yes, I remember this all quite well — a personal nightmare. It was my first official staff meeting as one of the newly elected Arts and Entertainment Editors for The Cavalier Daily. I could not believe I was there. Neither could my body, as my profuse fidgeting and waves of nerves continued through the presentation.

In contrast to what the April 25 editorial implied, it is critical to hold individuals who engage in hazing accountable for their actions. This is an essential step in preventing future hazing activities. Moreover, the University is actually doing a good job with education and has a great hazing prevention resource in the Gordie Center.

While almost a year has passed since I studied abroad at the University of Oxford last summer, glimpses of my time there have slipped into my mind every day since. Whether I’m cramming for an exam in Clem or catching up with a friend on the Corner, all of my favorite memories from abroad flash through my head like an infinite film reel.

No. 6 Virginia women’s tennis hosted the first two rounds of the NCAA Tournament over the weekend, competing against Long Island University and No. 41 Princeton. Although it is currently ranked sixth nationally, Virginia is the 5-seed in the tournament. The Cavaliers (24-4, 12-1 ACC) blanked both the Sharks (11-6, 3-1 NEC) and the Tigers (16-7, 6-1 Ivy), smoothly moving on to the Round of 16 for the fourth straight year. The victories marked the continuation of a 21-match streak of home wins. The Cavaliers will now look to extend that record to 22 at home against No. 41 Vanderbilt Saturday.

Virginia men’s basketball and Coach Tony Bennett waited a while to dip into the transfer portal this offseason, but they have finally freshened up the roster for 2024-25. The Cavaliers added former Florida State junior guard Jalen Warley Saturday morning following his visit to Grounds last week. Two days later, Bennett landed former Duke freshman forward TJ Power and former San Diego State sophomore forward Elijah Saunders within hours of each other, while former Vanderbilt freshman forward Carter Lang followed close behind Tuesday.

Saturday, the area outside the University chapel was invaded by police who were tasked with clearing the encampment for Gaza which was deemed to be an “unlawful assembly.” There were many heavily armed police officers. There was pepper spray which was wielded against demonstrators. There were riot police who marched in tandem, first against people within the Gaza encampment and then against a crowd of onlookers. It was a chaotic and deeply disturbing scene. But this violent chaos was not inevitable, nor was it started by student protesters. Rather, it arose as a direct result of University and police action.

The ACC Championship Bracket was released Sunday, and Virginia softball has earned the 4-seed in the tournament — the program’s highest seed since being seeded No. 2 in 2010. The Cavaliers (32-17, 15-9 ACC) will take on No. 5 Clemson in the first round in Durham, N.C, earning the seeding nod over the Tigers (33-16, 15-9 ACC) thanks to a series victory over Clemson in March.

At 1 a.m. after a late-night exam, I ventured to The White Spot with my date for the first time after hearing about the fan-favorite diner many times prior. As we walked into the home of the famous $7.00 Gus Burger, we were delighted to find comforting grilled classics and a bustling atmosphere. The White Spot is a timeless diner for Charlottesville residents and students looking for a greasy spoon infused with University spirit.

No. 2 Virginia men’s tennis — the No. 3 seed in the NCAA Tournament — hosted the first two rounds of the NCAA Tournament this weekend at the Boar's Head Resort in Charlottesville. Having prepared for this moment all season, the Cavaliers (24-5, 12-0 ACC) easily dominated over NJIT (19-6, 0-0 AEC) Friday and VCU (16-10, 2-0 Atlantic 10) Saturday to secure a spot in the Round of 16.

Over 50 police officers, including state troopers in riot gear, cleared the pro-Palestinian encampment near the University chapel Saturday afternoon and detained at least 25 protesters. While Virginia women’s lacrosse has had its share of lows in 2024 — the most recent one being a 19-4 defeat at the hands of No. 4 Syracuse in the ACC Tournament — the highs have been noticeably more frequent. Much of that is because of co-captain and senior attacker Morgan Schwab, who has tallied 18 goals and 53 assists in just 18 games played this season. Schwab brings an offensive presence that can’t be ignored, as just this season she has broken the all-time and single-game assists records for the program. The senior’s contributions on and off the scoresheet are crucial to the No. 7 Cavaliers’ (14-4, 6-3 ACC) success and will largely determine how far they go in the NCAA Tournament.

Friday’s rematch against No. 1 seed Notre Dame gave No. 4 seed Virginia a chance to bounce back and improve upon its performance from last weekend — one riddled by small mistakes from the Cavaliers (10-5, 1-3 ACC) as the Fighting Irish (11-1, 4-0 ACC) rallied late in the game to win 11-9. Instead, Notre Dame put on a show, scoring six goals in the first quarter and holding the lead the entire game on its way to an 18-9 win in the ACC Tournament semifinals in Charlotte, N.C.’s American Legion Memorial Stadium.

It's time to be real. I'm afraid I've been keeping a secret from you for a long time, and the moment to come forward has finally arrived. I’ve always advocated for honesty and transparency, so it’s only fair that I stick to these values for the sake of the students at this University and the readers of The Cavalier Daily. I, Cecy Juárez, am one of the three “squirrels of U.Va.” running the @thesquirrelsofuva page.
