The University introduced efforts to support workers furloughed by its contractors — such as Aramark — in an announcement from University President Jim Ryan to the University community Monday. The efforts include establishing a $2 million emergency assistance fund for the University’s contract workers and an additional $1 million to Charlottesville Area Community Foundation efforts.

University Provost Liz Magill announced Wednesday evening the default grading system is now credit/no credit for all spring semester undergraduate courses that have not yet completed coursework. Courses that are graded CR/NC — rather than with letter grades A through F — will not be factored into students’ grade point average, but they will count toward curricular, major and graduation requirements if completed with a letter grade equivalent of C or better.

Third-year College student Hunter Wagenaar announced that he is dropping out of the race for Student Council president during his closing remarks of The Cavalier Daily’s fourth-annual presidential candidate forum Monday night. The University Board of Elections is investigating Wagenaar’s allegations regarding violations of endorsing procedure policies.

University staff received report of a sexual assault Sunday afternoon, according to a timely warning email issued to the University community by Tim Longo, interim chief of University police and associate vice president for safety and security. The reported incident occurred around 1:30 a.m. Saturday in an on-Grounds residence hall.

The University released early action admission decisions Friday evening for the incoming Class of 2024. According to statistics provided by Dean of Admissions Gregory Roberts, out of the 25,160 students that applied in the early action cycle, 5,220 were offered admission — a 20.7 percent acceptance rate. Last year’s early action pool had an acceptance rate of 26 percent.

University Police arrested Charlottesville resident Anthony Lyle Lee Jr. Saturday, after a verbal altercation led to shots fired. He was charged with attempted malicious wounding and is being held at the Albemarle Charlottesville Regional Jail.

Engineering Dean Craig Benson announced Friday that alumnus Greg Olsen pledged $25 million to the school to be used for recruiting faculty, attracting doctorate students and supporting strategic initiatives. It is the largest gift in the School of Engineering’s history.

Gloria Graham, the University’s associate vice president for safety and security, has submitted her resignation, according to University Deputy Spokesperson Wes Hester. Graham’s resignation will go into effect Nov. 1, and her role will be filled in the interim by Tim Longo, who also currently serves as interim chief of the University Police Department.

Alan Taylor, chair of the history department’s Thomas Jefferson Foundation and two-time Pulitzer Prize winner for history, officially released his new book, “Thomas Jefferson’s Education,” Tuesday. Taylor gives a detailed account of the University’s failure to actualize Jefferson’s idyllic views on education and its ability to promote generational reform — especially in regard to society’s exploitation of enslaved laborers, who built and maintained the University.

The University announced Friday that it has established the Democracy Initiative Center for the Redress of Inequity Through Community-Engaged Scholarship. Referred to as the Equity Center, the project will promote partnerships between faculty and community members, so that the University may better support the Charlottesville community and address issues of racial and socioeconomic disparity.

During its meeting Tuesday evening, Student Council voted on a resolution in response to The Cavalier Daily’s reporting on newly-obtained email correspondence that ties members of the University’s admissions, advancement and administrative staff to a “watch list” of “high-priority” applicants connected to donors. The representative body failed to pass a resolution that would condemn the practice, with nine representatives voting in favor, eight against and six abstaining.

The University Board of Elections announced New Student Election results Thursday evening. In the first-year elections, approximately 35 percent of students voted for First-Year Council president, 33 percent for First-Year Council vice president and 31 percent for First-Year Student Council representatives. Out of 655 eligible transfer students, 57 students — or 8.7 percent — voted in the election for the transfer representative.
