Flash back to April 7, 2006. The Virginia men's tennis team entered the match that day against then-No. 14 Miami, riding a 24-match win streak in conference play dating back to 2004. The Cavaliers, ranked No. 8 in the country at the time, swept the doubles point - winning each match, 8-5, 8-6 and 8-2 - and entered singles play needing at least three wins to capture the overall victory. But Miami had a history of dismantling top opponents. At that point, the Hurricanes had defeated three other teams with higher rankings that year. Virginia only managed to pick up two singles wins, and Miami notched the upset, 4-3.

Cornell is known as the Big Red, but the coaching staff of its men's tennis team is almost entirely orange and blue. Head coach Tony Bresky served as associate head coach at Virginia for eight years before accepting the coaching job at Cornell last year. Assistant coach Houston Barrick went 60-0 in ACC play during four seasons at Virginia and captained the team during its NCAA semifinal run last year.

Against No. 16 Illinois Friday night, junior Drew Courtney and senior Michael Shabaz served lights out. The No. 3-ranked double squad in the country found impossible angles out wide and rocketed balls up the middle with regularity. On one particularly impressive series, the 6-foot-5 Courtney flung three consecutive aces past the Illinois duo of junior Dennis Nevolo and senior Johnny Hamui while serving at 3-3. But even as Shabaz and Courtney were impenetrable on their own serve, the Illini came up with just enough to deny Virginia a chance to break. The match appeared destined for a tiebreaker.

When freshman Alex Domijan first enrolled at Virginia last fall, Brian Boland, coach of the Virginia men's tennis team, knew he had landed one of the nation's top talents. The No. 12-ranked junior in the world, Domijan had already been selected as a practice partner for the United States Davis Cup Team, and, when he was just 17, reached the finals of a USTA Futures Tour event.

The top-ranked men's tennis team began its dual match season last night with a 12-1 win against No. 75 William & Mary. The Tribe, which has excelled in Colonial Athletic Association play but has not beaten the Cavaliers since 2002, was dominated on all fronts against Virginia, whose lineup includes seven players ranked in the nation's top 125. The two teams agreed upon an alternative scoring method in advance, playing five singles matches and eight doubles matches, each worth one point toward the final score.

One year ago, Barbara Schaedel addressed the Honor Committee regarding the case of her daughter, who was accused in April 2008 of plagiarism and expelled in October. Schaedel, who used her maiden name Pierson when addressing the Committee to protect the identity of her daughter, said her daughter became an "emotional wreck" during the course of the trial process. In her talk, Schaedel criticized the Committee's definition of plagiarism and encouraged the Committee to focus on the nature of intent when considering whether a student committed an act of plagiarism.

There are roughly 16,500 parking spaces at the University, but at times that seems difficult to believe. Searching for parking can be headache-inducing, and the vacant spots always seem to be located in permitted lots that parking enforcement officers patrol like vultures in the Arizona desert.

On a sunny Saturday morning during the first week of classes, I wandered Grounds between the Chapel and Newcomb Hall to ask students how they felt about parking enforcement. Is it too strict? Have you ever gotten a ticket? It wasn't a sexy topic - but people didn't hesitate to vent their complaints.

The Amphitheater was silent for several minutes as candles flickered in the dark. It was as if the faces behind them, of those who had gathered to commemorate the life of Yeardley Love - and reflect on the bonds of community that were broken as a result of her tragic death - had blended against the dark of the setting sun.

University students yesterday celebrated the 40th annual Earth Day with events across Grounds, culminating the week-long efforts of sustainability groups to promote awareness of environmental issues. In Newcomb Terrace, members of U.Va. Sustainability hosted the group's dumpster dive, CAN you guess contest and tap-water challenge. Students planted a dumpster in the middle of the terrace for the dive and separated trash from recyclables to show students how much waste in the dumpster could be deposited in a recycling bin.
