No matter what I do, I always seem to inevitably bump into them — U.Va. tour groups. Hordes of prospective students and parents shuffling around in pursuit of a peppy University Guide bouncing around the sidewalk telling them all about the wonders of the University. If I’m close enough to overhear, I become absorbed into the demonstration. Sometimes, I even find myself becoming convinced by the guide to come attend the University before I realize, “Oh wait, I already am a student.”

Unfortunately, for some, you may now be learning that we are approximately less than two months away from the beginning of a very chilly season. It is official — winter is coming. But do not fret! If you are completely and entirely behind on your seasonal preparations, you’re not alone. With Halloween out of the way and Thanksgiving mostly irrelevant when it comes to decor — because who decorates their dorm to be Thanksgiving-themed — there is now plenty of time to get into the cold spirit of the upcoming frost. Assuming enough people flush ice cubes down their toilets and tuck a few compostable dining hall spoons under their pillows, we may get some snow. Mother nature and global warming are at the wheel for that, however.

I think it’s safe to say that the second half of the semester ensues a different level of stress in the lives of college students. This particular time is when things begin to ramp up and motivation tends to fall. Some might be feeling more homesick as we await Thanksgiving and Christmas breaks, while others might face increased anxiety regarding upcoming midterms or projects. Regardless of the specific cause, it seems that a lack of motivation or exhaustion is something that college students commonly struggle with during this time.

I am an absolute sucker for fall — maybe the title of this article gave that away. Nonetheless, my love for this season goes deeper than finally having an opportunity to use the semi-cliché phrase of “turning over a new leaf.” Fall is all about a fresh start, and I love everything about that.
