The interaction between these seemingly disparate topics transformed a series of individual talks into a unified narrative, speaking to TEDxU.Va.’s ability to channel the wisdom of speakers from different professional and academic experiences on Grounds into a singular vision.


After speaking with some of my other Black friends, I found solace in knowing that I wasn’t the only person to have a complicated relationship with these twisted strands of DNA.

Like many other Black girls, there came a day when I recognized that I stood out — when I looked at all the TV screens and movies and realized that Barbie doesn’t have cornrows with brightly colored ball hair ties and barrettes at the ends.

As this year’s newest Meriwether Lewis fellows wrap up their summer session, Julie Caruccio, a MLI director and assistant vice president for research on the student experience, discusses the goals of the fellowship. Caruccio shares the history of the program and how it has evolved to continue to fit students' needs and expectations. Additionally, she describes the cohort’s summer project, where they were tasked with finding ways to build connectivity and foster relationships between people in various areas across Grounds.
